Return to Tiburon Town Hall

I’ve enjoyed showing my work in the Town of Tiburon, California, over the years — twice at the Tiburon Art Festival, twice at the Belvedere–Tiburon Library, and once at the town hall.

During the pandemic they didn’t show any art at the town hall and now are returning to community exhibits, this first one including artists who have shown there before.

I have two pieces showing in this exhibition: “Far More Blue” and “Unsquare Dance,” each 12” square, mixed media on cradled panel, © 2014–2023.

Tiburon Town Hall Art Gallery: Grand Reopening September 13, 2023

The Heritage & Arts Commission is celebrating the grand reopening of the Town Hall Art Gallery with the show “Past and Present.” The exhibition will feature 22 artists who have previously shown their works in the Town’s gallery.

The show opens Wednesday, September 13, with an artists’ reception from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the gallery. All are invited.

The artwork will be on display during Town Hall office hours (Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) until October 18, 2023. Please stop by!

Oil and water don’t mix

A drawing technique development by Paul Klee—transfer drawing with oil paint onto watercolor paper and then painting the image with watercolor paint—suits these images from rural New Mexico. The oil resists being covered by the water-based paint, keeping the painting fresh, interesting, and intimate.

Taos Pueblo vies with Acoma Pueblo/Sky City for the title of oldest continuously inhabited community in New Mexico, if not the whole USA—for thousands of years. I have visited Taos many times over the 40 years I’ve traveled to New Mexico. The only things that change are fresh paint on San Geronimo church and their acceptance of smart phone photography (where they previously required permits for every kind of camera).  Framed, 11″ x 14″, 2019. This painting is included in Art Works Downtown’s 2019 Small Works Exhibition.

Truchas is a small village along the High Road between Santa Fe and Taos. Whenever I visit this area in the fall, I always stop at a special spot in Truchas where cottonwoods are gloriously, vibrantly yellow. Well, of course there are vibrant cottonwoods all over the place, but this one spot just has the best compositions for photographing and sketching them. It always feels special to me.  Framed, 14″ x 11″, 2019.

Mixed-media collages at Terrestra

From October 2018 and into the new year, a dozen of my mixed-media collage pieces are on display and for sale at the beautiful gift shop Terrestra in Mill Valley, California.  Perfect timing for the holiday gift-giving season.

USk Chicago 2017

A  year ago already! Had a lot of fun sketching with Urban Sketchers at the Chicago Symposium July 2017. One morning on my own I did a little painting of Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park:

Paul Wang’s (from Singapore) workshop was situated almost under the el tracks, structures I kept coming back to photograph that week. Here’s my sketch from the workshop:

Maru Godas’ (from Barcelona) workshop, “Gouache Like a Child,” was way fun and inspirational. Here’s my quick sketch in gouache from over the railroad yard:

James Richards’s workshop was in front of the Art Institute. I got my architectural thing going on in this sketch (pardon the lavender-hued photo shot in the shade):

My last workshop was with architect William Cordero (from Costa Rica) at a farmers market and using collage:

Four inspiring artists whose work I’ve admired for some time. Chicago was fun for me since I spent a lot of time wandering around my old haunts and photographing so much architecture. Love that city. Hate the weather, but love the city and the people.

“Watercolor: All In the Family”

Our family watercolor exhibit is having a good stay at the Healdsburg Senior Center, through Mother’s Day, May 14, 2017. My paintings, my brother’s paintings, and our dad’s work, which inspired both Ron and I. If you’re headed to the Sonoma Wine Country, stop by the center and take a look at our show. (The center isn’t open on weekends, alas.) Or come to the artists’ reception, Friday, March 24, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Hope to see you there! 133 Matheson St., Healdsburg — just off the plaza.
